He gained widespread recognition in 1986 for his portrayal of Lieutenant Tom “Iceman” Kazanski in the iconic film “Top Gun,” starring alongside Tom Cruise. This role catapulted him to stardom, leading to a series of notable performances throughout the late 1980s and 1990s.

In 1991, Kilmer delivered a compelling performance as Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone’s biographical film “The Doors,” showcasing his dedication by singing many of The Doors’ songs himself.

Throughout his career, Kilmer was known for his intense commitment to his roles, which sometimes led to reports of on-set tensions with directors and co-stars.

In 2022, he made a poignant return to the screen, reprising his role as Iceman in “Top Gun: Maverick,” where filmmakers utilized AI technology to recreate his voice, which had been affected by his health struggles.

In 2014, Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer, a battle he faced with resilience and determination. The treatments, including chemotherapy and a tracheotomy, affected his vocal cords, leading to significant changes in his speech. Despite these challenges, he remained active in the industry and continued to engage with his fans.
