“One Million Streams Only Pays $300 in Nigeria, Aim Higher – Burna Boy Advises Nigerian Artists
On April 8, 2025, Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Burna Boy shared his perspectives on the music industry via his Instagram story, emphasizing the contrast between online popularity and real-world success. He cautioned fellow artists against being misled by social media metrics, mentioning that Nigerian social media fans and Twitter polls do not necessarily translate to tangible support, such as filling concert venues.
Moving on, Burna Boy addressed the significant disparities in streaming revenues across different regions. He noted that one million streams generate approximately $300–$400 in Nigeria, whereas the same number of streams yield about £3,000–£4,000 in the UK, $3,000–$4,000 in the US, and €3,000–€4,000 in Europe. He advised artists to set their sights beyond achieving number one spots on Nigerian streaming platforms and to consider diversifying their income sources.
