Lionel Messi was the star of the night as Inter Miami cruised to a 4-0 victory over New York City FC at Citi Field on Wednesday, a result that sealed their place in the 2025 MLS playoffs.

The Argentine captain bagged a second-half brace, taking his tally to five goals in just over a week. Though he had the chance to grab a hat-trick, Messi unselfishly handed a late penalty to Luis Suárez, who converted.

Messi’s double means he has now scored two or more goals in eight of Miami’s last 12 matches, a feat only three other players in MLS history have achieved in a single season.

With 55 points from 29 games, Inter Miami sits third in the Eastern Conference, just two matches behind leaders Philadelphia Union. Next up for Javier Mascherano’s side is a clash against Toronto FC as they continue their push for the Supporters’ Shield.
