“I Wasn’t Happy Being African”: Tiwa Savage Reflects on Her Childhood in London
Popular Afrobeats singer, Tiwa Savage, reflects on a time when she wasn’t happy growing up as an African in London.
The singer revealed this during a recent interview as she praised the positive global reputation of Afrobeats. She shared that the genre made her feel confident in her culture, as she was once ashamed as a child.
“Afrobeats is the fastest-growing genre in the world. We kind of created it with nothing — no support, no infrastructure, no real belief, even from our own people initially.”
“I remember growing up in London and I was not happy being African. But now I’m so proud because of how big Afrobeats is growing.”
