Former Minister Lai Mohammed Decries Fake News Impact
Former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, revealed that a fake news report about $1.9bn allegedly in his account almost destroyed his 40-year marriage.
Speaking at an event organized by Olabisi Onabanjo University, Mohammed stressed the need to combat fake news, sharing how his wife believed the false report and demanded access to his account.
Mohammed clarified the report was false, noting his ministry’s annual budget was far less.
He emphasized the serious consequences of fake news, including ruined marriages and suicides.
He also defended President Bola Tinubu’s administration, asserting that the economic hardship is not the government’s fault and expressing optimism for Nigeria’s future.
Dr. Lanre Akinola, head of the Mass Communication Department, noted the event aimed to connect students with real-world experiences.
