UK Universities Call for Fee Increase Amid Visa Cuts

Published

on

UK universities are struggling financially due to recent visa restrictions on international students. Leaders are calling for a raise in domestic tuition fees to offset significant deficits. Sally Mapstone, President of Universities UK, warned that without action, the sector could face severe declines.

Visa restrictions have led to a drop in international student applications, causing a £1.7 billion deficit in teaching and a £5 billion shortfall in research. University officials are urging for a fee increase from the current cap of £9,250, with proposed new fees between £12,000 and £13,000. Labour’s new Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson, has promised to address these issues, though immediate solutions are uncertain.
