Atiku Abubakar Responds to Akume’s Call for North to Wait Until 2031 for Presidency

Published

on

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reacted to statements made by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, advising northern political aspirants to refrain from contesting the presidency until 2031.

Akume, speaking on Sunday, December 8, suggested that the North should wait for President Bola Tinubu to complete two terms in office before contesting. He also specifically urged Atiku to abandon his aspirations for 2027, asserting that if it were God’s will, Atiku could become president even at 90 years old.

In a response through his media aide, Paul Ibe, Atiku dismissed Akume’s remarks, criticizing Tinubu’s current administration and stating, “God forbid” that Tinubu deserves another term. He further asserted that Nigerians, not political figures, will determine who leads the country in 2027.

Atiku also pointed out the imbalance in power distribution between the North and South, emphasizing that by 2027, the South would have held leadership for 17 years, compared to the North’s 11 years. He argued that this disparity raises concerns about fairness in power rotation.

Atiku, who was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the 2023 presidential election, continues to advocate for balanced leadership and the will of the people in shaping the nation’s future.
