Borno Governor Zulum Opposes Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills, Citing Regional Inequity

Published

on

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, has voiced strong opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform bills, warning they would disproportionately benefit states like Lagos and Rivers while disadvantaging others.

During an interview on Channels Television on December 1, Zulum said, “Based on our calculations, only Lagos and Rivers States will benefit from this scheme. We advised the Federal Government to pause and expunge clauses harmful to Northern Nigeria.”

Zulum stressed the need for broader consultation to ensure fairness and expressed concern that the reforms could shortchange other regions.

He also defended the North’s support for Tinubu, noting the region delivered over 60% of his votes in the 2023 elections. “I was one of the first governors to publicly advocate for power to shift to the South,” he added.

Zulum’s comments underscore growing concerns about the potential regional disparities in the proposed reforms.
