Canada Appoints First Female Chief of the Defense Staff
In a historic move, Canada has appointed Lieutenant-General Jennie Carignan as the first female Chief of the Defense Staff, effective July 18.
Carignan, a decorated military engineer with 35 years of service, has commanded troops in Afghanistan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iraq, and Syria. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau praised her exceptional leadership and dedication.
This appointment aligns with Trudeau’s commitment to gender equality and comes as Canada faces challenges in defense spending, recruitment, and equipment modernization.
Carignan joins a series of women in senior leadership roles appointed by Trudeau since 2015.
