CBN Governor Cardoso Urges Nigerians to Rethink “Japa” Amid Economic Reforms
The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, has called on Nigerians to reconsider emigrating, commonly referred to as “Japa,” emphasizing the need for collective efforts to rebuild the nation.
Speaking at the 59th annual Bankers Dinner organized by the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) in Lagos, Cardoso outlined two key reasons for his appeal.
He warned that emigrating often involves selling assets at undervalued prices, which benefits opportunistic buyers.
He also stressed the importance of being part of the solution to Nigeria’s challenges, citing increased interest from international investors in the country’s potential.
Cardoso acknowledged the difficulties caused by recent economic reforms but assured Nigerians that these measures aim to create an economy where businesses and individuals can thrive.
He urged collaboration among banks, regulators, businesses, and citizens to achieve this vision.
“Now is the time for all hands to be on deck,” Cardoso concluded.
