Concacaf has taken disciplinary action against referee Marco Antonio Ortiz Nava after he was seen approaching Lionel Messi for his jersey following Inter Miami’s Champions Cup victory over Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday night.

After the final whistle, Nava appeared to ask Messi for his shirt, sparking controversy. He later explained that he was actually requesting an autograph for a relative with special needs. However, his actions violated Concacaf’s code of conduct for match officials.

In a statement shared with ESPN, Concacaf confirmed the decision, saying, “The referee’s conduct does not align with the Confederation’s Code of Conduct for match officials and existing processes for these types of requests.”

They also noted that Nava admitted his mistake, apologized, and accepted the punishment. Concacaf has not yet revealed the specific disciplinary measures taken against the referee.
