Education Minister Revises Age Requirement for JAMB Admissions After Stakeholder Backlash
Education Minister Prof. Tahir Mamman has revised his earlier directive that only candidates 18 years and older could be admitted to tertiary institutions by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
On Thursday, July 18, during an ongoing policy meeting organized by JAMB in Abuja, Mamman initially announced that only applicants 18 years and above would be eligible for admission.
Stakeholders at the meeting opposed his statement, arguing that it is illogical to deny admission to 16-year-old students who have passed WAEC and JAMB.
In response to their suggestions, the minister agreed that students 16 years and above would be eligible for this year’s admission, while the 18 years age requirement would be implemented starting next year.
