Ekiti Governor Awards N1 Million to Two Disability Teachers

On October 6, 2024, Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji celebrated Teachers’ Day by honoring two remarkable educators dedicated to teaching students with disabilities.

Each teacher received a cash award of 500,000 naira, highlighting the governor’s commitment to acknowledging the vital role of these educators in fostering inclusive education.

The event took place during a lively celebration in the state, where the achievements of educators were showcased.

Mrs. Adetoun Agboola, Special Adviser on Special Education and Social Inclusion, praised Governor Oyebanji for his unwavering support for inclusivity in education.

She noted that this recognition serves as a significant morale booster for teachers in the disability sector.

Agboola remarked that this was the first time such awards were presented during the Teachers’ Day celebration in Ekiti State, emphasizing the historic nature of the gesture.

“The recognition of these dedicated teachers who tirelessly work with children with disabilities reflects Governor Oyebanji’s strong commitment to promoting inclusivity in our educational system,” she stated.

She also acknowledged the challenges faced by these educators over the past year.

Canadian Woman Arrested at Lagos Airport for Smuggling Synthetic Cannabis

A 41-year-old Canadian, Adrienne Munju, was arrested by the NDLEA at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, for smuggling 35.20 kilograms of “Canadian Loud,” a potent synthetic cannabis strain.

She was apprehended on October 3, 2024, during the clearance of a KLM flight from Canada.

Munju confessed that she was recruited online and promised $10,000 CAD for delivering the drugs to Lagos.

She accepted the offer to pay for her master’s degree in Canada. NDLEA continues to investigate the smuggling network.

ISWAP Insurgents Attack Geidam, Yobe State, Leaving One Dead

Suspected ISWAP insurgents launched a deadly attack on Geidam town, Yobe State, on October 5, 2024, around 3:30 a.m., killing one person and causing widespread damage.

The insurgents torched two customs vehicles and desecrated the grave of Khalifah Ayiloma in Kolori Ward.

During the attack, 60-year-old night watchman Dahiru Muhammadu was shot in the neck at his residence near Geidam Polytechnic.

He was rushed to Geidam Specialist Hospital but was pronounced dead. Security forces are investigating the incident to prevent further assaults.

FG Prepares to Evacuate Citizens from Lebanon Amid Rising Conflict

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that, so far, there have been no reported fatalities among its citizens in Lebanon despite the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

As Israel intensifies its airstrikes across Lebanon, the Nigerian government is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of its nationals in the region.

In a statement released on Saturday, Ambassador Eche Abu-Obe, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed that the Nigerian Embassy in Lebanon is actively engaged in efforts to protect Nigerian citizens caught in the turmoil.

The government emphasized its unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of its nationals during this challenging time.

“The Federal Government has initiated preparations for the evacuation of its citizens from Lebanon.

Importantly, we are pleased to report that no Nigerian life has been lost since the onset of the conflict,” the statement affirmed.

Additionally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that the Nigerian Embassy had previously advised its citizens in Lebanon to consider voluntary evacuation, emphasizing that commercial flights remain operational for those looking to leave.

For those in southern Lebanon, where hostilities have been particularly fierce, the Nigerian Embassy has facilitated relocations to safer areas, such as Beirut, with the assistance of community leaders.

This initiative aims to ensure that Nigerians are in secure locations as the situation develops.

The Nigerian government also reassured its citizens that it remains in constant communication with relevant stakeholders, emphasizing its dedication to the safe return of all nationals from the conflict zone.
