“I Lost My Mum and My Marriage Ended” – Funke Akindele Opens Up on Her Struggles

Nollywood star Funke Akindele has opened up about her struggles, revealing that she’s been solely responsible for raising her kids without support from her ex-husband, Abdulrasheed Bello, better known as JJC Skillz.
The actress and filmmaker, who tied the knot with JJC in 2016 and welcomed their twin boys in 2018, parted ways with him in 2022. JJC had announced their separation on Instagram, stating that they had chosen different paths and were still sorting out issues around custody and shared business ventures.
In a recent sit-down with Chude Jideonwo, Funke got candid about the emotional toll her personal life had taken on her, especially after her mother’s passing and her loss in the 2023 elections.
“I don’t like to dwell on grief,” she said. “When my mum died, I just wanted to move on quickly. But I didn’t give myself time to truly feel it, and it all came crashing down later. I nearly lost myself.”
She recounted how online backlash pushed her over the edge. “One day, I just picked up my phone and went live. I was overwhelmed. People were accusing me of things I didn’t do. I had just lost my mum, my marriage ended, politics didn’t go well, and I still had to show up and work. I have kids I’m taking care of on my own. And people still wanted to drag me?”
For the first time in a long while, she broke down. “I cried for weeks. I was mentally drained,” she admitted.

“Women, stop trading your body for material things like a Lamborghini. And men, can’t you talk to women without offering money? Burna Boy did well. The government should step in and stop this trend where women think they can get cars and houses in exchange for sex,” he said.
He also shared a video captioned: “Burna did well. Never press money when you can scope. The government needs to step in and stop this sex-for-Lambo trend.”
