Flavour Rejects Afrobeats Label, Claims African Identity
Nigerian music is gaining international recognition, and one of its prominent figures is Flavour, known for his vibrant fusion of cultural elements. In a recent interview on The Afrobeats Podcast with Adesope, Flavour was asked about not being included in the list of Afrobeats’ biggest global stars. He responded by clarifying that he doesn’t identify as an Afrobeats artist but rather as an African artist. Flavour emphasized that while the media often focuses on Afrobeats, it overlooks the diverse musical traditions across Africa, and he believes his work represents African music more broadly.
Flavour, whose career spans over two decades with numerous hit records and critically acclaimed albums, stressed that not every artist needs to fit into the Afrobeats mold. He referenced pop star Asake, who modernizes Fuji music, as an example of the diverse sounds emerging from Africa. Flavour’s commitment to African music is evident in his latest album, “African Royalty,” released in December 2023. He has also collaborated with various African artists, including Fally Ipupa and Diamond Platnumz, further solidifying his identity as an African artist.
