Former INEC Chairman Jega Urges Nigerians to Stay, Advocates for Renewed Hope in the Country

The former Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, has addressed the increasing emigration of the Nigerian youth.

During the launch of the Unveiling and Rebranding Nigeria Initiative in Abuja on Saturday, Jega highlighted that the country’s challenges, including its global reputation as the “poverty capital of the world” and the “Japa” phenomenon—an exodus of young talent—indicate a troubling loss of faith among citizens.

“This pattern reflects a dangerous loss of hope, one that patriotic Nigerians must address by rebuilding confidence in our nation’s future,” he stated. Jega recalled Nigeria’s post-independence period, a time when the country stood as a source of inspiration across Africa and for Black communities globally, attributing much of that success to the selfless leadership of the First Republic.

Jega urged Nigerians to reject the view of Nigeria as a failed state, stressing, “We must challenge this narrative by reforming our systems, fostering unity, and building a nation that serves all its citizens.”
