Governor Abiodun Condoles Ibafo Fire Victims and Urges Fuel Transport Safety

The Governor of Ogun State has extended his heartfelt condolences to the victims of the devastating tanker fire that occurred in Ibafo, leaving behind a trail of destruction and hardship.

The fire broke out in the early hours of Wednesday, engulfing the area in flames that consumed vehicles, buildings, and other properties.

The scale of the damage was immense, with properties worth millions of naira reduced to rubble.

Governor Dapo Abiodun expressed his deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as an unfortunate event that has caused significant distress to the affected residents and business owners.

In his message, he said, “My heart goes out to all those who have been impacted by this terrible inferno. We stand with you during this difficult time of loss and devastation.”

Although the fire wreaked havoc on numerous properties, the governor found solace in the fact that no lives were lost, stating, “It is indeed unfortunate that property worth millions has been destroyed, but we are grateful that there was no loss of life.”

He also stressed the importance of swift recovery efforts, assuring those affected that the state government would provide necessary support to help them rebuild their lives and businesses.

Governor Abiodun further emphasized the need for safety precautions when it comes to transporting and storing fuel. He urged tanker drivers and operators to strictly adhere to safety protocols to avoid such catastrophic events in the future.

He highlighted that incidents like this could be prevented with proper handling and maintenance of fuel tankers, as well as adherence to guidelines that promote safety on the roads.

In light of the incident, the governor called on relevant agencies to increase oversight and ensure that tanker drivers undergo thorough safety training.

FG Extends NYSC Orientation Camp From 3 to 6 Weeks

The Federal Government has announced an extension of the NYSC programme. It can be noted that the NYSC camp orientation is usually for three weeks before the youths go out to gain experience, employment, and serve the country for one year.

However, the FG announced that the passing-out parade from camp will be cancelled, and corps members will now spend six weeks in camp instead of three weeks.

“The first two weeks speak to laying a foundation on civic responsibility. The next two weeks will look at career mapping, basic accounting literacy skills, business planning and access to finance. The final two weeks, we intend to have focused corps-stream-specific training aligned with the corps member’s designated stream based on his choice, academic background and skills profile.”

Federal Government Clarifies Position on Proposed Tax Recommendations

The federal government reacted to claims stating that the new tax rules will be imposed on telecommunications and petroleum products for Nigerians.

The FG released a statement to explain the process and stated that there is no intention to place taxes on telecom and petroleum products and services.

“Those recommendations do not amount to government policy and are not binding on Nigeria. Decisions on tax matters are taken through established constitutional and legislative processes and are guided by national priorities and prevailing economic realities.”
