A Texas father, Fernando Vega, faces a possible death sentence following his indictment on capital murder charges for the deaths of his newborn twin daughters, Massail and Mirena.

The six-week-old infants were found unresponsive in their Houston home on October 4, 2023, marking a deeply tragic case that has shocked the community.

Authorities report that Vega’s charges stem from allegations of severe abuse inflicted on the young girls, who were discovered on a couch showing signs of physical trauma.

Officers responding to the call noted discoloured skin and bruising across the twins’ bodies, along with evidence of fractures in one of the infants.

These injuries suggested a pattern of physical harm that may have gone on for weeks, leading investigators to dig deeper into the circumstances surrounding the girls’ short lives.

Vega’s legal troubles began in April when he and the twins’ mother, 21-year-old Angelina Belinda Calderon, were both arrested.

Originally, they faced charges of causing serious bodily harm to a child.

However, further investigation by local authorities and findings from the Harris County Institute of Forensic Science revealed disturbing details that shifted the focus of the case.

Pathologist Dr. Jesus Rico, who examined the infants’ remains, found evidence of dehydration, fractures, and bruising.

One of the twins also displayed brain bleeding and spinal cord damage, indicators of recent trauma that, investigators allege, were inflicted solely by Vega.

Prosecutor Edward Appelbaum addressed the court during a recent hearing, stating his intention to conduct an exhaustive investigation into the twins’ deaths before moving forward with murder charges.

Vega’s case is still under close examination, and the prosecutor emphasized that the evidence would be carefully reviewed to ensure justice is served.

Court records reveal the twins were malnourished and may not have received adequate medical care after their initial discharge from the hospital.

Their deaths have drawn considerable attention, with community members expressing grief and outrage over the loss of such young lives.

Nigerian news analyst, Mahmud Jega, has shared his opinion on the recent airstrike carried out by the United States in Nigeria, stating that Nigerians should not blame President Bola Tinubu for the incident.

Jega made this statement during a recent interview, where he said he does not believe many people will hold the Tinubu administration responsible, as Donald Trump had issued threats against Nigeria long before Tinubu’s administration.

“No, I don’t think many people will blame the Tinubu administration for what is happening now because President Donald Trump, when he first made the threats, it was clearly not in coordination with the Tinubu administration or the government of Nigeria,” Jega said.
