Senator Sumaila Kawu (NNPP, Kano South) has accused politicians, especially lawmakers, of promoting drug use among Nigeria’s youth. He claimed that politicians not only provide drugs to young people but also encourage their use to support illegal political activities. Kawu made these statements during a debate on the “National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation” bill, sponsored by Sen. Rufa’i Hanga (NNPP, Kano-Central), which passed its second reading.

Kawu also alleged that many politicians store drugs in their homes and offices, especially during elections. He urged his colleagues to take responsibility and called for mandatory drug tests for politicians before they contest elections or assume office. Kawu stressed that lawmakers must work with relevant stakeholders to effectively tackle the issue of drug abuse in the country.
