An Abuja-based legal practitioner, Pelumi Olajengbesi, has issued a powerful warning to the federal government, urging them to rethink their approach to peaceful protests in Nigeria.

In a letter addressed to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, Olajengbesi emphasized the critical importance of upholding the right to peaceful protest and refraining from criminalizing dissent in Nigeria.

He expressed deep concern about the government’s recent actions against participants of the #EndBadGovernance protests.

Olajengbesi highlighted the fundamental right to peaceful protest as a cornerstone of democracy, reminding the government that Nigeria’s Constitution and international treaties protect this right.

He argued that levying charges of treason against peaceful protesters is not only excessive but also unconstitutional, infringing upon citizens’ rights.

The lawyer warned that such punitive measures could set a dangerous precedent and harm Nigeria’s global reputation.

He noted instances where the government’s aggressive stance on peaceful civic engagement has led to concerns about eroding democratic principles.

In a bid to encourage a more democratic approach, Olajengbesi urged the Attorney General to use his influence to steer the government away from stifling opposition voices and toward respecting citizens’ rights to voice their concerns without fear of retaliation.

He also called for the immediate release of all arrested protesters and the dismissal of the treason charges against them, stressing the need for the government to refrain from punitive actions that target citizens exercising their constitutionally guaranteed rights.

In conclusion, Olajengbesi expressed hope that, with the Attorney General’s guidance, Nigeria would continue to move toward a more just and equitable society where the rule of law prevails.
