A female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member serving in Kwara State was reportedly assaulted by teachers at Government Day Junior Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin, for allegedly not greeting them properly.

The incident happened on Thursday, November 28, 2024, when the corps member visited the school to collect her clearance letter. According to eyewitnesses, a teacher attacked her, tearing her NYSC T-shirt, while another teacher allegedly slapped her during the confrontation.

Morakinyo Oladipo, the NYSC spokesperson in Kwara State, confirmed the incident. He assured that steps are being taken to seek justice for the corps member. The state government, through the Ministry of Youth, has been informed and is already involved in addressing the matter.

“The NYSC expresses its displeasure regarding the incident,” Oladipo said. “The corps member will be reposted to a different location to help her recover from the trauma.”

The Federal Government has announced an extension of the NYSC programme. It can be noted that the NYSC camp orientation is usually for three weeks before the youths go out to gain experience, employment, and serve the country for one year.

“The first two weeks speak to laying a foundation on civic responsibility. The next two weeks will look at career mapping, basic accounting literacy skills, business planning and access to finance. The final two weeks, we intend to have focused corps-stream-specific training aligned with the corps member’s designated stream based on his choice, academic background and skills profile.”
