Niyi Ijalaye, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ogun State with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has passed away. Ijalaye collapsed and died on Monday evening following a meeting of RECs held at INEC’s headquarters in Abuja.
According to an anonymous source within Ogun INEC, Ijalaye, who hailed from Ondo State, had returned to his hotel room after the meeting when the tragic incident occurred.
He had been actively engaged in the meeting, dressed in a blue-striped kaftan and a red cap, which was chaired by INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.
The meeting addressed important topics including the upcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states and the seven vacant positions in both the National and State Assemblies.
Niyi Ijalaye was appointed as the REC for Ogun State in March 2022, following the transfer of his predecessor, Olusegun Agbaje, to Lagos State. As of now, INEC has not yet released an official statement confirming Ijalaye’s death.
