Peter Obi Slams Edo Election and Calls for Urgent Electoral Reform
In a recent statement, Peter Obi expressed strong concerns regarding the recent elections in Edo State, asserting that the events witnessed over the weekend do not reflect the democratic values the nation strives for.
He described the election as a clear example of “state capture” that severely undermines Nigeria’s democratic processes.
Obi warned that a flawed leadership recruitment process poses a significant threat to the nation’s future, urging those in authority to address this alarming situation instead of relying on it to maintain power.
He emphasized the importance of the Independent Review of Votes (IReV) and the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), stating that these tools must be utilized effectively to cleanse the electoral process of the falsification that has plagued it for too long.
He cautioned agencies and individuals undermining democracy from positions of authority, reminding them that their time in power is not eternal.
Obi pointed out that the society currently being harmed will eventually seek accountability for the damage inflicted.
Addressing those complicit in perpetuating what he termed a charade, he urged them to reflect on their roles in weakening the foundations of democracy, stressing that the repercussions of their actions will ultimately affect future generations.
Obi reiterated that true politics should focus not just on capturing power but on saving the nation and ensuring it works for all citizens, regardless of their backgrounds.
He concluded with a commitment to building a genuinely democratic Nigeria, asserting that such a transformation is indeed possible.
