President Joe Biden has declared his intention to issue a proclamation granting mass clemency to veterans who were convicted under laws banning homosexuality in the U.S. armed forces, now acknowledged as discriminatory.

This move aims to rectify what Biden called a “historic wrong” inflicted on thousands of LGBTQI+ service members who were discharged or court-martialed due to their sexual orientation or gender identity.

The pardon will primarily affect those prosecuted under Article 125 of the Code of Military Justice, which criminalized consensual gay sex until its revision in 2013.

Biden’s decision, announced during Pride Month, underscores his administration’s commitment to equality and justice for LGBTQ individuals who served their country.
