‏Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak acknowledged defeat, announcing his resignation as leader of the Conservative Party.

In a sombre speech, he conveyed his apologies to the nation and recognized the electorate’s unmistakable demand for transformation.

“I will shortly be seeing His Majesty the King to offer my resignation as prime minister to the country. I would like to say first and foremost, I am sorry,” Sunak said.

“I have given this job my all but you have sent a clear signal that the government of the United Kingdom must change and yours is the only judgment that matters. I have heard your anger, your disappointment. And I take responsibility for this loss.”

In his speech, Sunak also extended his praise to Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, who is set to become the new prime minister.

“Whilst he has been my political opponent, Keir Starmer will shortly become our prime minister. In this job, his successes will be all our successes, and I wish him and his family well. Whatever our disagreements in this campaign, he is a decent, public-spirited man who I respect,” Sunak remarked.

It has been shared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is calling on the federal government to suspend the tax law set to take effect on January 1, 2026.

This was revealed in a statement released by Ini Ememobong, National Publicity Secretary of the PDP. He stated that this new law shows how Nigerians and the masses will be affected, arguing that the government is prioritizing finance over security and other pressing matters.

“Rather than address these issues comprehensively, the Presidency has consciously minimized them and instead insisted that the commencement date must stand, despite the discrepancies,” the party said, adding that this “clearly shows where the priority of the government lies between Nigerians and money.”
