Former Senator for Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has called for an increased allowance of N100,000 for female members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

This suggestion comes in response to the recent announcement of an allowance increase to N77,000 for all corps members.

Sani expressed his views through a post on X, highlighting the unique challenges faced by female corps members.

He argued that their allowance should be higher due to the additional difficulties they endure during their service year.

He emphasized that while the overall increment is a positive development, special consideration should be given to female corps members who often deal with extra responsibilities and vulnerabilities.

In his words, “The increase in the allowance of the Youth Corpers to 77k is commendable.

But those of the Female Corpers should have been jerked up to 100k since they suffer more.”

The Federal Government announced that the new allowance structure for NYSC members will take effect starting July 2024.

This increment aligns with the enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act of 2024.

The information was confirmed by a statement released by Caroline Embu, Acting Director of Information and Public Relations for the NYSC, citing a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission.

The letter, dated September 25, 2024, was signed by the Commission’s Chairman, Ekpo Nta.

The call for additional support for female corps members has sparked discussions on the unique experiences faced by women during their mandatory service.

Many argue that recognizing these challenges through increased allowances would be a step toward more equitable treatment.

The debate continues as stakeholders consider the best ways to support all corps members while acknowledging the diverse difficulties they face across the country.

The Federal Government has announced an extension of the NYSC programme. It can be noted that the NYSC camp orientation is usually for three weeks before the youths go out to gain experience, employment, and serve the country for one year.

However, the FG announced that the passing-out parade from camp will be cancelled, and corps members will now spend six weeks in camp instead of three weeks.

“The first two weeks speak to laying a foundation on civic responsibility. The next two weeks will look at career mapping, basic accounting literacy skills, business planning and access to finance. The final two weeks, we intend to have focused corps-stream-specific training aligned with the corps member’s designated stream based on his choice, academic background and skills profile.”

The federal government reacted to claims stating that the new tax rules will be imposed on telecommunications and petroleum products for Nigerians.

The FG released a statement to explain the process and stated that there is no intention to place taxes on telecom and petroleum products and services.

“Those recommendations do not amount to government policy and are not binding on Nigeria. Decisions on tax matters are taken through established constitutional and legislative processes and are guided by national priorities and prevailing economic realities.”
