At the 97th Academy Awards, Sean Baker’s film “Anora” emerged as the evening’s standout, securing five Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing, and Best Actress for Mikey Madison.

Baker’s personal haul of four Oscars in a single night matches a record set by Walt Disney 70 years ago. In 1954, Disney won four awards across different films; however, Baker’s achievement is unique as all his awards stem from a single project.

“Anora” tells the compelling story of Ani, a New York sex worker who embarks on a new life after marrying the son of a Russian oligarch. The film’s narrative delves into themes of identity and transformation, resonating with audiences and critics alike.

Mikey Madison’s portrayal of Ani earned her the Best Actress award, marking her first Oscar win. Her performance was lauded for its depth and authenticity, contributing significantly to the film’s overall success.

Baker, known for his dedication to independent filmmaking and authentic storytelling, expressed hope that “Anora’s” success would bolster support for indie films. He also acknowledged the contributions of the sex worker community, whose stories informed the film’s narrative.

In addition to its Oscar triumphs, “Anora” received multiple nominations at other prestigious award ceremonies, including the Golden Globes and the British Academy Film Awards.
