Senator Jimoh Ibrahim Advocates Heavier Taxes for Wealthy Nigerians to Boost Economy
Jimoh Ibrahim, the Senator representing Ondo South Senatorial District, has called for the taxation of rich Nigerians to help address the country’s economic challenges. Speaking to the Senate Press Corps after plenary on Tuesday, December 3, Ibrahim emphasized that taxing the wealthy is a global practice during economic crises.
During the plenary, he provided insight into the report on the 2025-2027 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP). Ibrahim highlighted that implementing higher taxes on affluent citizens would be a first for Nigeria and an effective way to increase the nation’s revenue.
“The rich in Nigeria are not paying enough taxes to be good jolly fellows with the poor. In other countries, taxes are paid on transactions, and the rich contribute more. Luxury taxes should be monitored and collected,” he said.
The senator also proposed the creation of a comprehensive database of taxable wealthy individuals, noting that only 18% of Nigerians currently fall within the tax net, leaving 72% untaxed.
Ibrahim urged the government to focus on transactional taxes for affluent citizens and to introduce laws ensuring effective collection of luxury and other taxes.

South Korea’s Security Chief Calls for No Violence Despite Tensions Over Yoon’s Arrest
South Korea’s presidential security chief, Park Chong-jun, made a clear statement on Friday urging that there should be no violence or bloodshed if authorities try to execute another arrest warrant for impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, following his failed attempt to impose martial law.
He refused to cooperate with investigators, and last week, a tense standoff occurred between his security forces and law enforcement officers attempting to arrest him.
Yoon’s actions during the attempted martial law declaration have led to insurrection charges.
“I understand the concerns of the public, seeing the government in such conflict and confrontation,” Park said.
“However, there must be no physical clashes or bloodshed in this situation.”
Investigators obtained a new arrest warrant for Yoon after the previous seven-day order expired on Monday, aiming to question him over charges related to insurrection.
However, despite this, Yoon’s supporters have rallied around him, even braving freezing temperatures outside the presidential residence to protect him.

Nigerian Government Cuts Minimum Wage Review Time from Five to Two Years
The Nigerian government has announced plans to shorten the minimum wage review cycle from five years to two, signaling a more frequent adjustment to align with economic realities.
This decision was revealed by the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, during an address in Abia State.
Onyejeocha explained that the revised timeline is part of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to improving the welfare of Nigerian workers.
She emphasized that the government is determined to ensure that wage reviews happen regularly and in a timely manner.
“We are no longer sticking to the old five-year schedule for minimum wage reviews,” Onyejeocha said.
“Instead, we will now revisit the minimum wage every two years, with the next review set for less than two years from now.”
