Soyinka Expresses Amazement at Reaching 90 Years and Reflects on Life Journey
Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka expressed astonishment at reaching the age of 90, a milestone he never anticipated.
At the 2024 edition of his International Cultural Exchange Programme held at his residence in Ijegba, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Soyinka reflected on his journey as a writer, driven by a desire to rectify narratives he encountered in his youth.
He clarified an incident from the past, emphasizing that he did not “break into” but rather “sneaked into” a radio station during the military era to reclaim what he believed belonged to the people, aiming to prevent the dissemination of potentially demoralizing content that could perpetuate a culture of brutality.
In his address, Soyinka criticized Nigerians for their propensity to fault the state while neglecting introspection.
He argued that societal issues like kidnapping and robbery stem not merely from poverty or inequality, but from inherent selfishness and a pursuit of extravagant lifestyles.
The event also featured an essay competition attended by students from various parts of Nigeria, engaging in thoughtful discourse on both national and international topics.
