Spain-Bound Nigerian Sentenced to Four Years for Cocaine Trafficking at Lagos Airport

A Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced a Spain-bound Nigerian, Francis Akajiobi, to four years imprisonment for attempting to traffic 1.20 kilograms of cocaine.

Akajiobi, who was apprehended by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, pleaded guilty to the charge of drug trafficking.

He was arrested on July 25, 2024, while trying to board a Royal Air Maroc flight to Valencia, Spain, with cocaine concealed in footwear.

The NDLEA prosecutor, Abu Ibrahim, informed the court that Akajiobi’s actions contravened Section 11(b) of the NDLEA Act.

After reviewing the evidence and confirming the absence of prior criminal records, Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa convicted Akajiobi. The judge, however, offered an alternative of a N2 million fine in lieu of the prison term.

Akajiobi’s defence counsel, Benson Ndakara, pleaded for leniency, citing his client’s first-time offender status and cooperation with the court.

Nigerian news analyst, Mahmud Jega, has shared his opinion on the recent airstrike carried out by the United States in Nigeria, stating that Nigerians should not blame President Bola Tinubu for the incident.

Jega made this statement during a recent interview, where he said he does not believe many people will hold the Tinubu administration responsible, as Donald Trump had issued threats against Nigeria long before Tinubu’s administration.

“No, I don’t think many people will blame the Tinubu administration for what is happening now because President Donald Trump, when he first made the threats, it was clearly not in coordination with the Tinubu administration or the government of Nigeria,” Jega said.
