Three Teenage Girls Drown in Pond in Jigawa State
In a tragic incident in Tulla village, located in the Buji local government area of Jigawa State, three teenage girls drowned in a pond.
According to a statement released by ASC Badruddeen Tijjani Mahmud, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Jigawa State, the victims were identified as Fatima Sule and Nasiya Sale, both aged 12, and Huwaila Sa’adu, who was 13 years old.
The statement detailed that the girls had ventured to the pond to cut grass for their livestock when the unfortunate event occurred.
The NSCDC received an emergency call around 11:00 a.m. on Saturday from members of the Tulla community. A swift response was initiated, with the Buji Local Government Divisional Officer and the disaster management team arriving at the scene shortly after the call.
Working alongside local residents, the rescue team conducted a search operation that lasted approximately 30 minutes.
Their efforts led to the recovery of the girls’ bodies, which were subsequently transported to the Tulla village Health Center. There, the medical officer confirmed their deaths.
Following the confirmation, the bodies were returned to their families, who arranged for their burial in accordance with Islamic customs.
The loss has deeply affected the community, leading to a period of mourning. In response to the incident, the NSCDC has urged the public to exercise caution during the rainy season to prevent similar tragedies.
