Turkey Blocks Instagram Amid Censorship Controversy

Published

on

On Friday, Turkey’s national communications authority, BTK, announced that access to Instagram has been blocked as of August 2, 2024.

The authority did not provide specific reasons for this action. This decision comes in the wake of criticism directed at Instagram by a senior Turkish official.

Fahrettin Altun, the communications director for the Turkish presidency, publicly criticized Instagram earlier in the week.

He accused the platform of obstructing users from sharing messages of condolence for Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in an attack in Tehran.

Haniyeh, the leader of the militant Palestinian group Hamas and an ally of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was reportedly targeted by Israel.

As a result of the block, many users in Turkey have reported difficulties accessing their Instagram feeds, a situation confirmed by AFP reporters.
