Two children have tragically lost their lives following a single-car accident involving a Toyota Camry on the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway, near Kere Itori.

The incident, which took place late Saturday night around 11:00 p.m., was confirmed by Mrs. Florence Okpe, the spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State, through a statement issued in Abeokuta on Sunday.

Mrs. Okpe attributed the cause of the accident to speeding, emphasizing that the vehicle, bearing registration number AGL 36 JA, was overcrowded with passengers at the time of the crash.

According to her, a total of nine individuals were involved, consisting of seven men, one male child, and one female child.

Sadly, both children, a boy and a girl, lost their lives in the accident. The other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Mrs. Okpe used the tragic event as an opportunity to remind motorists of the importance of adhering to traffic regulations, especially with regard to speeding and overloading.

She urged all drivers to exercise caution and be responsible on the roads to prevent further accidents of this nature.

The spokesperson extended her condolences to the families of the victims, stressing the ongoing efforts of the FRSC to promote road safety and reduce accidents across the country.

The Federal Government has announced an extension of the NYSC programme. It can be noted that the NYSC camp orientation is usually for three weeks before the youths go out to gain experience, employment, and serve the country for one year.

However, the FG announced that the passing-out parade from camp will be cancelled, and corps members will now spend six weeks in camp instead of three weeks.

“The first two weeks speak to laying a foundation on civic responsibility. The next two weeks will look at career mapping, basic accounting literacy skills, business planning and access to finance. The final two weeks, we intend to have focused corps-stream-specific training aligned with the corps member’s designated stream based on his choice, academic background and skills profile.”
