Tyla Says She Is Not Sorry After Tiwa Savage Apologized to Black Americans on Her Behalf

Grammy-winning South African star Tyla has responded after Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage issued an apology to Black Americans on her behalf regarding her use of the word “coloured.”

The controversy began when Tyla described herself as “coloured,” a term that is widely recognized in South Africa to define people of mixed heritage. While the label is normal in her country, it carries a deeply offensive history in the United States, where it was once used to demean Black people.

Her statement quickly drew backlash from many African Americans, sparking debates online. In the middle of the storm, Tiwa Savage, while speaking on The Breakfast Club in the U.S., apologized to the Black community on Tyla’s behalf, saying she did so as the younger star’s “elder.”

That apology, however, didn’t sit well with many South Africans, who criticized Savage for speaking for Tyla without fully understanding South African identity and racial context.

Tyla herself also seemed to address the issue indirectly during her performance at the Global Citizen Festival in New York over the weekend. Right before performing her track Mr Media, she boldly told the crowd: “Sorry, I am not sorry.” The statement was widely seen as a rejection of Tiwa’s public apology.
