Why Gowon Refused to Join Any Political Party in Nigeria

Published

on

Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd.), has explained why he has remained neutral and not aligned with any political party in Nigeria.

Speaking in Abuja on November 27 during a visit by the League of Northern Democrats (LND) led by Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, the 90-year-old elder statesman said his loyalty lies solely with Nigeria.

“My military background shaped my belief in serving the nation above all else,” Gowon said, adding that he draws from all ideologies, such as socialism and capitalism, to prioritize the greater good.

He recalled how the north made sacrifices during his time in government to address fears of regional domination, preventing secession threats from all regions. “If we had allowed it, we might have ended up as separate nations—whether Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, or otherwise,” he noted.

Gowon also expressed sadness over the region’s current challenges, including the rise of insurgent groups, which he said have created more problems for the north.
