Cholera Outbreak Claims Lives and Hospitalizes Hundreds in Nigeria

Published

on

A severe cholera outbreak in Nigeria has led to 30 fatalities and the hospitalization of over 1,141 individuals across various states. The crisis, particularly affecting Jigawa State, has seen an alarming number of cases with over 2,000 people, primarily children, being treated in local hospitals.

The outbreak has been linked to water pollution and poor sanitation practices, with areas like Hadejia being severely impacted due to water contamination from open defecation sites.

Efforts to combat the outbreak are underway, with the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) intensifying community sensitization on cholera prevention and promoting proper sanitation and hygiene practices.

Dr. Ramatu Aliyu, the FCT Minister of State, has emphasized the need for immediate action to curb the spread of the disease. The administration has mobilized health personnel and resources to affected communities, ensuring free treatment for those infected.

Furthermore, the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has provided medications and pledged additional support to help manage the crisis.
