NCDC Blames Poor Sanitation for Cholera Outbreak, Records 30 Deaths
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported a concerning surge in cholera cases, with a total of 1,141 suspected cases and 30 confirmed deaths recorded from January to June 2024.
The outbreak has significantly impacted ten states, including Bayelsa, Zamfara, Abia, and Lagos, which together account for 90% of the cases.
Cholera, a highly contagious disease, is primarily transmitted through contaminated food and water. Symptoms include sudden onset of painless watery diarrhea, vomiting, and fever, which can lead to severe dehydration and death if untreated.
The NCDC emphasizes that cholera can be effectively treated with prompt administration of oral rehydration solutions and antibiotics if detected early.
To prevent the spread of cholera, the NCDC advises ensuring access to safe drinking water, proper sanitation, and good hygiene practices such as frequent handwashing.
The public is urged to boil and store water safely, avoid consuming raw or undercooked foods, and maintain proper waste disposal practices to mitigate the risk of infection.
