A Nigerian national, Ahmed Kamilu Alex, wanted in the United States for alleged cyber fraud, was apprehended by the Bureau of Immigration (BI) in Quezon City, Philippines.

The BI confirmed on Monday, October 28, 2024, that Alex, 35, was arrested by the fugitive search unit along Panay Avenue on October 11. He had been added to the Philippines’ immigration blacklist as a fugitive.

According to Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado, Alex and two accomplices allegedly orchestrated a cyber fraud scheme during the COVID-19 pandemic by creating fake websites mimicking legitimate U.S. government agencies.

These sites targeted U.S. military personnel, charging them between $500 to $48,500 for false emergency leave processing fees. The U.S. government has requested Alex’s deportation to face charges. He is currently held in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City, awaiting deportation proceedings.

The BI stated that Alex will remain blacklisted and banned from re-entering the Philippines following his deportation.
