Edo Accountant General and Officials Detained by EFCC Over Agricultural Loans

Published

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained four officials from Edo State’s Treasury Office, including Accountant General Julius Anelu, at its Benin Office.

The detention stems from an inquiry into agricultural loans secured by the Edo State Government from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL) since 2018.

According to Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Osa Nehikhare, the loans have been fully repaid, and the officials initially complied with EFCC’s invitation on Thursday.

However, the EFCC reportedly requested additional personnel not originally summoned, now detained alongside the initial officials in Abuja.

The Edo State Government condemned the EFCC’s actions, suggesting an attempt to disrupt state governance ahead of the upcoming transition on November 12, marking the end of Governor Godwin Obaseki’s tenure.

In a statement, the government called for the EFCC to act “in the interest of democracy, justice, peace, and the well-being of Edo people,” stressing the state’s commitment to transparency.
