Former Delta Governor Ifeanyi Okowa Detained by EFCC Over Alleged Misappropriation of N1.3 Trillion
Former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, remains in Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) custody in Port Harcourt for a second night, as investigations continue into alleged misappropriation of N1.3 trillion in state funds. Okowa, who served as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) vice-presidential candidate alongside Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 election, responded to an EFCC summons on Monday but has since been held while investigators assess the charges.
The Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has endorsed Okowa’s detention, viewing it as a significant step in combating corruption in Nigeria.
APC spokesperson Valentine Onojeghuo criticized Okowa’s term, alleging “reckless borrowing” and a “high debt profile” with limited infrastructure development to show for it.
The APC stated Okowa’s arrest signals that no official, regardless of rank or affiliation, is beyond accountability.
Reports indicate Okowa faces additional allegations involving N40 billion purportedly invested in UTM Floating Liquefied Natural Gas shares and private equity in a Nigerian bank, allegedly using state funds.
Investigators are also examining Okowa’s acquisition of properties in Abuja and Asaba, Delta State, for personal use.
