South Korean President Survives Impeachment Vote Amid Political Turmoil
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol narrowly avoided impeachment as the opposition-led National Assembly’s motion fell short of the 200 votes needed. Only 195 votes were cast after members of Yoon’s ruling People Power Party boycotted the session.
The political crisis began earlier this week when Yoon briefly declared martial law, shocking the nation and global markets. The decree, which marked the first such move in nearly four decades, was rescinded within six hours amid widespread backlash.
Saturday’s vote highlighted deep divisions, with opposition lawmakers urging defections from the ruling party. Three People Power Party members voted, but it wasn’t enough to remove Yoon. Protests outside parliament saw over 100,000 demonstrators calling for his ouster, while smaller groups rallied in his support.
In a public address, Yoon apologized for the turmoil but refrained from resigning, leaving his future to his party’s decision. Investigations are underway into allegations of abuse of power and insurrection, with severe penalties, including life imprisonment, on the line.
The opposition has vowed to push for another impeachment attempt, as the political crisis continues to escalate.
It has been reported that Bola Ahmed Tinubu was absent at the commissioning of the Opebi-Mende Link Bridge, which took place on April 8, 2026.
However, Senate President Godswill Akpabio represented the President and carried out the ceremony.
As he commissioned the project, he stated “On behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, I commission these projects.”
Residents of Lagos should prepare for traffic disruptions as several roads will be closed due to the visit of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is set to commission infrastructural projects.
The commissioning will take place on April 8 and 9, 2026.

Opebi, Allen Avenue, Ikeja, Ojota, and Victoria Island.
Affected areas on Thursday (April 9):
Lekki-Epe Expressway, Ikoyi, Victoria Island, and Ajegunle.
Motorists are advised to plan alternative routes and expect heavy traffic during these periods.
