“We Had High Hopes But Substituted Osimhen to Avoid Injury” – Buruk
Galatasaray’s manager, Okan Buruk, has explained why he decided to substitute Victor Osimhen during their UEFA Europa League play-off clash against AZ Alkmaar on Thursday night.
With his team trailing 2-0 after 55 minutes, Osimhen sparked hope by scoring just a minute later. Roland Sallai then leveled the score in the 70th minute, but Galatasaray was still behind on aggregate.
Despite the urgency of the game, Buruk made the surprising decision to take Osimhen off in the final 10 minutes. He later clarified that the move was to protect the striker from injury, especially since Álvaro Morata was already sidelined.
“It wasn’t the result we wanted. We had high hopes, and if we had scored the first goal earlier, the game could have gone differently,” Buruk said. “A few players performed well, but as a team, we were below our usual standard.”
