EFCC’s Twitter Account Goes Down During Cyber Threats
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has lost access to its official X (formerly Twitter) account, @officialEFCC, which boasted 2.2 million followers. For the past three days, the account has been showing a message that reads, “This account doesn’t exist.”
Dele Oyewale, the EFCC’s chief spokesman, confirmed the issue, attributing it to a network problem. He stated that the agency’s ICT department is working diligently to restore the account.
This incident follows recent threats from a group of suspected internet fraudsters who vowed to launch a cyber attack against the EFCC.
The threats, posted on platforms such as Reddit, were in response to the agency’s intensified efforts to combat online fraud, which the fraudsters claim is unconstitutional.
The EFCC has been under scrutiny for its aggressive tactics, including raids on hotels and university dormitories, which critics argue infringe on citizens’ rights.
The cause of the account’s disappearance remains uncertain, with possibilities including a targeted cyber attack, a sanction by X, or deactivation by the EFCC. The agency’s other social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram remain unaffected.
