Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has heaped praise on the club’s latest addition, Piero Hincapie, describing him as a player who will add strength and competitiveness to his squad this season.

The Ecuadorian defender arrived from Bayer Leverkusen on a season-long loan, with the Gunners holding an option to make the deal permanent for around £45 million. Arsenal beat rivals Tottenham to his signature, after Spurs had been frontrunners for the deal.

At just 23, Hincapie has already built an impressive reputation, making 166 appearances for Leverkusen and playing a key role in their Bundesliga title triumph last season. He has now been handed the No. 5 shirt at the Emirates.

Arteta expressed excitement about the signing, highlighting the defender’s character and blend of youth and maturity. “He brings qualities that will make us stronger,” the Spaniard said. “We’re delighted to welcome Piero and his family into the Arsenal family.”
