Cucurella Says UEFA Changed Handball Rule After His Germany Incident
Spain defender Marc Cucurella has revealed that UEFA altered its handball rule after a controversial incident involving him in the Euro 2024 quarter-final against Germany.
During the match, the ball struck Cucurella’s arm inside the box, but no penalty was given, sparking heated debates worldwide about how handball decisions were judged at the time. Spain eventually won 2-1 with a late header from Mikel Merino.
Speaking to AS, Cucurella said UEFA even used his case as an example when explaining the rule change to players. “They told me it was because of my handball against Germany that the rules had to be adjusted,” he explained.
The Chelsea defender, however, made it clear he had no intention of handling the ball. “The shot came at me from very close, it just hit my arm. I didn’t mean it. If it was on purpose, I’d probably be the most hated guy in Spain,” he added.

It has been reported that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) fined Egypt $5,000 following their clash with Zimbabwe for failing to manage post-match media obligations.

Head of the Super Eagles, Eric Chelle, shared that the big-name players on the team are not happy about being benched.
He recalled when he took out Samuel Chukwueze during the match against Tanzania.
