EndBadGovernance Organizers Demand IGP’s Immediate Removal Over Protest Killings
The Take It Back Movement (TIB), a prominent group behind the EndBadGovernance protests, has called for the immediate dismissal of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Olukayode Egbetokun.
This demand follows the reported killing of several protesters during demonstrations across the country.
According to a statement released by TIB’s National Coordinator, Sanyaolu Juwon, the organization alleges that Nigerian police officers were responsible for the deaths of at least 40 protesters.
These incidents occurred during nationwide protests against the high cost of living, which began on August 1 and are slated to conclude on August 10.
TIB claims that over 1,000 individuals have been detained in various states, including 632 in Kano and more than 109 in Sokoto, for participating in the protests.
The statement also condemned the use of teargas and live ammunition by the police against demonstrators, emphasizing that the violence has led to unnecessary fatalities.
TIB criticized the handling of the protests, noting that the demonstrations, which started as peaceful rallies, were marred by disruptions and violence, reportedly fueled by criminal elements.
The group insists that the ongoing situation reflects poorly on the current administration’s approach to handling civil dissent and has urged President Bola Tinubu to take immediate action by removing the IGP to restore order and prevent further loss of life.
