Manchester United legend Gary Pallister has criticized manager Ruben Amorim for labeling the current squad as “the worst team” in the club’s history. Pallister, who played for United during challenging times in the early 1990s, argued that Amorim’s comments were harsh and not entirely accurate.

Amorim made the remark after Manchester United’s 3-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League. While expressing frustration with the team’s struggles, the Portuguese coach admitted later that he regretted his statement, recognizing it might have been an overreaction to the disappointing result.

Reflecting on Amorim’s comments, Pallister recalled his own experience with a struggling United side in 1990. Speaking to Punters Lounge, he explained, “I’ve been part of a United team that was in a worse position than this one.

In April 1990, we went to Millwall, and if we’d lost, we’d have dropped into the bottom three. That team had talented players like Steve Bruce, Mark Hughes, Paul Ince, Brian McClair, Danny Wallace, Lee Sharpe, and myself, but we were struggling to find consistency.”

Despite the difficulties back then, that same team eventually turned things around and won the Premier League title in 1993, marking the beginning of United’s dominance under Sir Alex Ferguson.

He also suggested that Amorim’s comment was an emotional reaction to the Brighton defeat, possibly said to deflect criticism. “Ruben Amorim made that remark with a wry smile, likely anticipating the backlash after the result,” Pallister noted. “It’s now up to the coaching staff to find a system that works and get the team back on track.”
