“I Used to Go to the Morgue to Dress Dead Bodies” – Mama G on Her Struggles Before Fame

Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor, famously known as Mama G, has opened up about the hardships and challenges she faced before achieving fame in the Nigerian movie industry.

In a conversation at the pre-premiere dinner for Funke Akindele’s movie Everybody Loves Jenifa, Mama G shared her journey and the struggles she endured to provide for her family.

“I used to go to the morgue to dress dead bodies so my children could go to school and eat,” Mama G explained, speaking about the sacrifices she made to ensure her family’s well-being.

Mama G went on to describe how her experiences shaped her into the strong woman she is today, and how she relates to the work ethic of Funke Akindele.

She praised Akindele, calling her a “very strong woman” and noting their similarities.

“Funke Akindele is a very strong woman. I love strong women. I am a strong woman.

I went through thick and thin to become who I am today,” Mama G said.

The veteran actress spoke about how the people in her hometown deeply appreciate her, having witnessed her struggle firsthand.

“No problem is accepted in his town, but in my place, they appreciate me a lot because they saw me through all these things,” she added.

“That’s the way I see Funke. When I see her, I look at myself. She’s a replica of who I am,” Mama G remarked.

She expressed how some blogs chose to refer her as Wizkid’s Baby Mama when writing about her and not labelling her by her efforts.

“When Wizkid won a Grammy, I wrote a statement about how far Afrobeat has come. They published the statement, and the caption was “Wizkid baby mama. The narrative does not recognise that you’re an entrepreneur and a hardworking businesswoman. I’m not only a mother but also a manager, and I’ve helped build a legacy.”
