Reality TV star and content creator Elozonam has opened up about the negative impact of Nigeria’s rising “japa” culture on his relationships.

The term “japa” has become popular in recent years, referring to the growing trend of Nigerians seeking better opportunities by relocating to other countries.

In a recent episode of the Uncolored podcast, Elozonam explained how his once-close relationships with his twin brother and other siblings have suffered since they moved abroad.

The distance, combined with the challenges of maintaining long-distance relationships, has left him feeling more isolated than before.

Elozonam recalled how this trend first started affecting his life in 2018 when his boss at his 9-5 job decided to move to Canada with his family.

“We were close, and when he left, it felt like the first domino fell,” he shared.

“After that, it was like the floodgates opened, and one by one, the people I care about started leaving Nigeria.”

This constant wave of departures has left him hesitant to form new friendships.

“Now, I’m always cautious about getting too close to people because they could just pack up and leave tomorrow,” he admitted.

“Everything feels shallow. You can’t build deep connections because you’re always bracing for someone else to leave.”

Elozonam mentioned how the economic difficulties in Nigeria played a huge role in this exodus.

The country’s rising inflation, lack of job opportunities, and overall decline in living conditions have driven many Nigerians to seek a better life abroad.

“It’s tough,” he said. “Nigeria isn’t getting any better, and everyone knows it.

It makes you wonder who’s next to leave. It’s like a countdown you can’t control.”
