NNPC Uncovers 165 Illegal Refineries in Niger Delta
In the past week, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) discovered 165 illegal refineries in the Niger Delta. From June 15 to 21, around 400 incidents of oil theft and vandalism were reported.
NNPC found 69 illegal connections in Bayelsa and Rivers States and recorded eight oil spills due to vandalism.
In Warri, an illegal loading point was discovered, and 69 illegal refineries were dismantled in Okrika, Rivers State. Additional illegal sites were found in Abia and Bayelsa States.
The NNPC also uncovered 19 illegal storage sites and seized 11 vehicles and 39 boats transporting stolen crude.
NNPC CEO Mele Kyari stressed the need to address security challenges to boost oil production, noting that over 5,800 illegal pipeline connections and 6,000 illegal refineries have been removed in the past two years.

Jonathan emphasized the challenges faced while her husband, Goodluck Jonathan, was in office, particularly during high-profile incidents like the Chibok schoolgirls’ kidnapping.
Since leaving office in 2015, she has embraced a peaceful private life.

Couple Arrested for Alleged Child Abuse and Starvation in Anambra State
A couple, Mr. Uche and Mrs. Peace Mbonu, were arrested in the Osumenyi community of Nnewi South LGA, Anambra State, for allegedly abusing and starving their five underage sons.
The arrest followed reports of neglect and deprivation, with the children purportedly left to eat raw rice due to a lack of food.
The couple denied the accusations, claiming the children had a habit of eating raw rice.
The state’s Women Affairs Commissioner, Ify Obinabo, condemned the abuse, and the couple has been handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution.

Fatal Crash Amid Heavy Rain on Third Mainland Bridge
A tragic collision on Saturday morning claimed a life on Lagos’ Third Mainland Bridge, spotlighting the perilous consequences of speeding in adverse weather conditions. The incident involved a Mini Truck and a Toyota Camry, with excessive speed cited as the cause amidst heavy rainfall, according to LASTMA. Three survivors were rescued near Unilag waterfront by LASTMA operatives.
Mr. Sola Giwa, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Transportation, expressed deep concern over the incident and reiterated the importance of adhering to speed limits enforced by Lagos State law. Immediate medical assistance was provided, and swift traffic management efforts ensured minimal disruption.
